I originally planned on only doing this for my home state of Michigan.
Then someone asked if I could do it for Florida...then Arizona...and the next thing I knew, I was crunching numbers and compiling county-level data for state after state.
I’ve completed 31 states so far. The remaining 19 are trickier because, while I have state-wide data for both exchange enrollment and Medicaid expansion enrollment, the county-level data is harder to dig up in some of them. The District of Columbia, of course, doesn’t require a “county-level” breakout at all.
I’ve posted the state-level table above, and the Washington table below as an example. The other states can all be found over at a single link at ACA Signups, along with my methodology and some caveats/notes for various items.
I’ve also included a list of which U.S. Senators are up for re-election in each state. Unfortunately, not only are there only 8 Republicans in the batter’s box, most of them are in deep red states. On the other hand, both Jeff Flake (Arizona) and Dean Heller (Nevada) are probably sweating right now.
States completed include:
Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
I’m missing the county level data for Medicaid expansion enrollment for the following states:
Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
If anyone can track that down for me, it would be helpful. Bear in mind that only people eligible via ACA expansion are relevant here; county data for total Medicaid enrollment won’t do (although I might be able to parse it out from that).
Also, a woman named Veronica (@VeroPArtist on Twitter) came up with a great hashtag for the GOP “replacement” plan: #RepealAndErase. I like it!
Again, the county-level data for 31 states can be found here. (along with caveats/disclaimers/etc)
It takes an awful lot of time and effort to maintain the ACA Signups website. If anyone’s in a position to help support the ACA Signups project, it would be tremendously appreciated.
