Yesterday’s CUA diary, hosted by ericlewis0, asked about the pastimes we had in our youth. I missed out on that discussion, because I was engaging in one of my current-day pastimes — namely being paid to walk in the woods. It’s a good gig if you can get it. Here in Georgia, we’ve had close to a week of 70-degree days without rain. It’s ideal for working outdoors, and I spent Monday and Tuesday in a pine forest about 30 miles from home.
I’ve hardly had time to even think of a CUA topic this week, much less write anything. With that in mind, let’s make this discussion a bookend to yesterday’s topic.
What pastimes and hobbies do you have now? I’m especially interested in those that might be out of the ordinary, such as chasing marmots on showshoes...oh wait, that one’s already taken!
My most unusual hobby is the sport of Ultimate Frisbee (most of the time it’s simply called Ultimate). For those of you who have never played it, or seen it played, here’s a brief description. The “official” team consists of 7 players on each side, but a fun game can be had with 4-on-4. All that’s needed is a plastic flying disc, a flat field, and markers for the sidelines and endzones.
Teams can only advance downfield by throwing the disc to teammates; running with the disc is not allowed. A throw to a player in the endzone is a score. If the disc is thrown away or intercepted, possession immediately goes to the other team, and everyone scrambles in the opposite direction. The offensive team becomes the defensive team, and vice versa. It’s a fast-paced game with few pauses for breaks. Intrigued? Check the USA Ultimate website for more details of the game.
You’d expect most Ultimate players to be young and athletic, and you’d be right. Ultimate is very popular in the colleges, and has spread into high schools across the country. There are some very good players who are over 40, of course, but they are in the minority.
So here I am, a geezer in possession of a Medicare card, mixing it up with players one-third my age. I don’t ask for mercy; I just play as hard as I can. And I dread the day when injury or old age overtakes me, forcing me to merely watch instead of participate.
Yesterday I spent six hours in the woods, doing my forestry thing. I drove home, changed clothes, and played Ultimate for two hours. Fun stuff.
This is one of my philosophies of life:
If I was capable of doing something yesterday, I can do it today.
That’s my oddball pastime, the one that people are surprised to learn about me. What’s yours? As always, this is an open thread. Anything goes.
THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY
Nationwide: January 21, 2017
Find your march here and start a group effort to march together, it will be listed here in CUA.
Women’s March on America, inspired by the Women’s March on Washington, calls on all Americans across the political spectrum to hold marches on the same day, at the same times, in communities across the country.
Together, we will send a message to our leaders and the world that the United States of America stands for values of human decency, equal rights and freedom from discrimination.
Our vision is that on January 21, 2017, the day after the Inauguration, Americans will unite in towns, cities, and schools across the nation to march in solidarity with communities affected by hate, intolerance, and acts of violence.
Many of us will not be able to make it to the march in Washington, DC. But we can come together in our local communities to march for our shared values.
