Alleged billionaire and popular vote loser Donald Trump is Making Lawsuits Great Again.
As of midday Tuesday, Trump has been named in 42 federal lawsuits since his inauguration. By comparison, former President Barack Obama was named in 11 suits during his first 11 days in office -- some of them involving the long-debunked "birther" claims that Obama was not an American citizen.
Wow, what a coincidence—Donald Trump was one of the shitheels who stoked the claims that Obama was not an American citizen. Anyhoo, go figure, the guy whose name is synonymous with breaking his word, breaking his contracts and getting hauled into court took only a week to start turning the federal government into just another lawsuits-flying subsidiary of Trump, Incorporated.
Most of the lawsuits center around—of course—Trump's religious test for legal entry into the United States. Also of note, though, is the CAIR lawsuit charging that by not divesting from his myriad businesses, Donald Trump personally violated the Constitution of the United States as soon as he entered office. That one would seem to be blindingly obvious, but it's not clear that any American has the standing to actually hold Trump to the Constitution if he doesn't feel like it so, shrug, we'll have to wait and see.
Oh—and all of this assumes that the Trump regime will abide by court decisions to begin with. It's genuinely not clear that will happen, as federal court orders continue to seemingly be ignored at American airports so that Team Bannon can continue deporting kids and grandmothers and men who risked their lives and extended families to act as our interpreters during our recent military experiments in democracy-building. You know, because Team Bannon isn't sure we can really trust those guys. They’re not even Russian.
Oh—it also assumes that the Republican Party would not immediately indemnify Trump and his team from illegal acts even if the court found them to be illegal acts. Given that Senate Republicans just changed committee rules to allow Tom Price to be confirmed regardless of Democratic objections his apparent acts to profit off his current government office—including insider trading—we have to wonder if the response to a court decision finding the Trump team to have broken federal laws might instead be Orrin Hatch and the rest of the Republican House and Senate hastily writing new bills allowing Republicans and only Republicans to break exactly those laws.
So hey, what the hell. Let's all watch and see if Donald Trump, the same Donald Trump who never gave two damns about American civil rights or nondiscrimination or corporate or anti-cheating-your-own-damn-investors laws before he was elected 'resident will even bother to abide by whatever the courts rule now that he's "in charge." Won't that be fun. Hey, it's just like one of those dystopian movies we all like so much.
