I was messing around with vote totals obtained from here, hoping to gain some insight into what happened. Looks to me like voter suppression is alive and well in Ohio and Wisconsin. In fact it is doing very well in Wisconsin where Trump won the state with fewer votes than were cast for Romney in 2012.
The states in the table are states that Obama won in 2012 and Hillary lost in 2016. I got estimates of the population increases from 2010 to 2016 here. I used 2/3 of this value to estimate the increase in number of votes (EstVote). Granted population increase is exponential but for short periods of time like this linear is ok. Here is my take on these data:
Florida: Vote total exceeds estimate by significant amount which could indicate more interest in the election, possible Diebold cheating and/or an inaccurate estimate (my guess). These causes are not mutually exclusive. Nothing too weird here that I can see.
Michigan: Everything looks reasonable to me. We just lost.
Ohio: Fewer votes in 2016 than in 2012 so it does not fit the pattern of the other state with a similar growth rate, Pennsylvania. Raise the flag on this one. Pretty good indication of possible voter suppression. Kasich will not be running in Ohio’s 2018 gubernatorial election. Let’s start working now to return this state to the blue column.
Pennsylvania: Rust belt state similar to Ohio but a large difference in vote totals. Pennsylvania exceeds the estimate by a significant amount which IMHO, casts strong suspicions on Ohio and Wisconsin and raises the old Diebold question.
Wisconsin: Wow, when it comes to voter suppression, Walker is certainly getting the job done. He has survived recall elections and protests and remains an effective agent of suppression in Wisconsin. Can we beat this guy in 2018?
