In our last exciting Road Warrior episode, Noble Fur and I paid a visit to my cabin in northern Washington. This was near the end of my western adventure for 2016. We had to drive nearly 500 miles back to the rental house in McCall, Idaho. A few days later, we’d be returning to Georgia.
The first stop on the way back from the cabin was Grand Coulee Dam. It was here that I decided to photograph Noble Fur in as many locations as possible on the journey home. There were times when I was too tired to bother; there were times when the kitty just wanted to stay in the truck. If it was noisy, especially when there was a lot of nearby traffic, she tried to hide under the truck, and I had to coax her into sitting still for a picture. Still, I managed to get some good images.
Back at McCall, there was one shot I really wanted to get. Ever since my first visit to McCall in 2012, I’ve been taking pictures of a pair of rocks at the edge of Payette Lake. Fellow Kossacks dubbed them the Gloomy Rocks.
In four years’ time, I acquired dozens of pics of the rocks, in sunny weather and in cloudy, in rain and in snow, in wind and in calm, in high water and low. It was only natural that I’d want a pic of Noble Fur on the rocks. Unfortunately, the city was doing construction work nearby. One evening, I carried Noble Fur all the way from the road to the rocks. She squirmed the entire distance. When we finally reached the rocks, all she wanted to do was jump off and run away. This is the closest I came to a regal pose.
The lease on the McCall house ran out at the end of October. On Halloween afternoon, we bade farewell to that part of the world, and rolled down State Highway 55 towards Boise. The highway passes through wide valleys rimmed by mountains. South of the town of Cascade, it parallels Payette River through a canyon.
Eventually the highway left the canyon, and we had to endure Boise traffic. It’s always a shock for me, driving in a city after being in rural locations for a long time. Soon, however, we were eastbound on Interstate 84. Having started the trip late in the day, we only went another 120 miles from Boise before calling it a night.
