Park Slope’s Iron Station is back again with their monthly Cocktail Resistance scheduled for April 6th next month. This time around, Cocktail Resistance is bringing awareness and support to progressive Rob Quist’s bid for Montana’s At-Large Congressional seat and the Nebraska Municipal Elections. Both elections occur in May.
Quist is running a competitive campaign to flip Montana’s single Congressional seat and add to the current Montana Democratic roster which includes U.S. Senator Jon Tester and Governor Steve Bullock. Lincoln and Omaha, NE are holding mayoral and city council elections on May 2nd and 9th. The Nebraska Democratic Party (NDP) seeks to flip the Omaha mayoral seat back to blue and lay the groundwork to re-take Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District - a seat held by a Democrat until it was lost in 2014. The NDP set up a special ActBlue account for donations so that folks can support the entire Democratic ticket in both municipal races.
Last month’s crowd of small dollar donors brought in $237 or about $6/person for the North Carolina Democratic Party. The money raised may not drop jaws in fundraising circles, but the message was clear: folks in neighborhoods far away from a hostile GOP are willing to come out and support their American neighbors in distress.
Over the phone, Alex Haskell, Co-Owner of Iron Station relayed that they felt the initial launch was a success. “It wasn’t a ton of money, but the money raised is only a piece of this.” Haskell felt that the event’s mood, the message, resonance and momentum demonstrated that the Adopt-A-State concept mattered.
Next month’s event brings a few important changes from last month’s. Adopt-A-State’s Founder & Chair Donald Georgette was unable to make the previous Cocktail Resistance. This time around, Georgette will be attending, “I was incredibly bummed out that I couldn’t make it to their initial launch. I wanted to be there so badly — if only to talk more about the Adopt-A-State concept and hear people’s ideas and feedback.” Adopt-A-State’s Co-Chair Catherine Darling will also be in attendance. This is will the first Cocktail Resistance that’s designed to support a specific upcoming election.
Adopt-A-State is an engagement concept that encourages residents in Democratic strongholds to “adopt” a GOP-dominated state and support its Democratic Party or competitive State Legislature Races.
