Angry about Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation?
Looking for a way to fight back?
While the U.S. Supreme Court is important, so are other courts, such as the Michigan Supreme Court. 2018 gives us the chance to take back our state Supreme Court. And to make that happen, Justice 4 Michigan - a project of the Michigan Democratic Party Justice Caucus, which I co-chair - is
bringing back the Supreme Challenge for the 2018 cycle.
Here are just a few reasons (in no particular order) why you — no matter where you live — should support the Supreme Challenge:
- The vast majority of cases appealed to SCOTUS never even get a hearing. That makes lower courts, such as state supreme and superior courts, the final arbiters of most cases.
- We plan to educate voters throughout Michigan on the importance of voting in the nonpartisan section of the ballot - and voting for candidates who care about people over corporations.
- We've done this before. The Supreme Challenge helped Democrats defeat "Sleeping Judge" Cliff Taylor in 2008 before pushing Bridget McCormack to 1st place out of five candidates in 2012 (outpolling an entrenched incumbent).
- By starting early, we're sending a message to potential state Supreme Court candidates that we're serious about getting them elected.
- We must seize the energy that has popped up since the 2016 election. People want to do something, and this will give them a great outlet.
- Your support will benefit union workers who will print our materials.
- Michigan has been rated as having the most corrupt government in the country - and our Supreme Court has been part of that.
- If Democrats don't win at least one Michigan Supreme Court see in 2018, the earliest we could have the majority is 2023 - after the next round of redistricting.
