Welcome to the seventeenth entry in our Backyard Science “Alphabet” series. Today’s Bucket is brought to you by the letter “Q”.
(Cat photo is Lucy, one of my neighbor’s Feline Overlords.)
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

(Most quarries in the coastal parts of Malaysia are above ground where they dig out the sides of hills.)
(Quail photo from my parent’s slide collection. Taken in the early 1990s near Bend, OR. The quail are all perched in a juniper tree.)
Who keeps leaving all these quarters lying around?
(A nice example of gneissic banding where the formation of the gneiss under pressure and temperature caused the minerals to differentiate.)
(Panum Crater is a Rhyolitic Lava Dome volcano just to the south of Mono Lake. Diary here.)
(Devil’s Post Pile is a columnar basalt formation near Mammoth, CA. Diary here.)
