The GOP really has a knack for supporting policies that promote death: worse healthcare, fewer environmental protections, and now...killing hibernating bears.
This Monday, Trump signed a law that rolled back Obama’s ban against hunting hibernating bears—because nothing says “FREEDOM!” like killing defenseless animals. HuffPo reports:
“We have to recognize this is not about the little polar bears, the little grizzly bears or wolves on television, this is about the state’s right to manage — not allowing the federal government to do so,” Young said in testimony in February. “We want to be able to take and manage our fish and game for the sustainable yield — so that our fish and game will be there forever.”
This is, of course, disgusting and out-of-touch. The Humane Society made a statement slamming the bill before Trump officially turned it into law. The jaw-dropping rollback has the animal rights community pissed — and rightly so. They were quick to denounce Republican hypocrisy:
Some members favoring the Young resolution cloaked their vote behind the mantle of states’ rights. But the states don’t have a right to dictate what happens on our national wildlife refuges. What’s the point of having a national wildlife refuge if the federal professional wildlife staff there automatically default to the management authority of the state?
Unsurprisingly, Rep. Young has #zerofucks for vulnerable animals and his message for pissed-off constituents? Don’t re-elect him.
He seems like a really nice guy.
