Trumpcare is back, it's worse than ever -- and this time, it might pass.
On Thursday morning, news broke that Republicans have found a version of Trumpcare that they hope can pass the House. They could vote on it as soon as next week, before the 100th day of the Trump presidency.
This new Trumpcare is anything but improved. It's full of cruel changes designed to win over the ultra-conservative "Freedom Caucus" -- including a provision that would allow insurers to charge people with pre-existing conditions tens of thousands of dollars more for insurance.
We need to make it crystal clear to House Republicans that passing this draconian attack on our health care will cost them their jobs. Here's how we can scare them:
There are two House special elections coming up in the next few months. Progressive populist Rob Quist will have the chance to steal a House seat in Montana this May, and Jon Ossoff, who just shattered expectations in his Georgia runoff, faces his final GOP opponent in June.
Both of these candidates are running in deep red districts. If they win, it will shake the GOP to its core and prove that politicians who attack our health care will pay a steep price for it.
Can you chip in $3 or more right now to support Rob Quist and Jon Ossoff -- and DFA's efforts to help them -- so Democrats can win big in these upcoming House special elections and show the GOP that threatening to take peoples' health care has consequences?
Here's what the Washington Post's Greg Sargent had to say about the proposal Congress is considering:
"The big story is that, while the new plan would ostensibly keep the prohibition against refusing to cover people with preexisting conditions, allowing premiums to be jacked up would functionally price a lot of those people out of the market, gutting that protection."
The Center for American Progress just released a study showing just how much premiums could rise, and the numbers are horrifying. Premiums for cancer patients could go up as much as $140,000 per year -- and if a woman chooses to get pregnant, she could be forced to pay a whopping 425% more for her insurance.
The GOP's previously proposed attacks on health care have been phenomenally unpopular, hated by Democrats and Republicans alike. But Republican members of Congress are under enormous pressure from corporate donors to destroy the Affordable Care Act anyways.
The only way we can kill Trumpcare for good is to prove to GOP elected officials that voters, not donors, have the final say -- and that people will turn out in droves to protect their health care. Rob Quist and Jon Ossoff can demonstrate this in their upcoming special House elections, but they need resources to get their message out to voters now.
Together, we can win big in the upcoming House special elections and make the GOP think twice about attacking health care access. Will you pitch in $3 or more to help Rob Quist and Jon Ossoff win now -- and to support DFA's work to put them over the top?
Thanks for your support -- and for being a part of the fight to protect and expand health care access.
