Received this e-mail today from former Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand’s (D. NH) gubernatorial campaign:
On this Earth Day, it is important to remember a big part of what makes New Hampshire wonderful.
Our environment - lakes and rivers, mountains and forests - is central to our quality of life. It’s what allows us to hike, swim, climb, bike, and breathe the clean air that makes New Hampshire one of the best places in America to live, work, and play.
It’s also what helps drive our tourism and agriculture - important to our economic future. More important, it is critical to attracting and keeping the future young talent we need to grow our economy.
Prioritizing the protection and cherishing of our environment is one key reason I am running for Governor, and is one of the reasons I have always been, and continue to be, opposed to the Northern Pass project.
Stand with me this Earth Day: Sign the petition to join thousands of New Hampshirites and oppose the Northern Pass!
The financiers of Northern Pass have been fighting for years to bring Northern Pass through New Hampshire’s forests and mountains. If not for the grassroots efforts and passion of thousands of New Hampshire residents like you and me, it would likely already have seen the light of day.
It will not help our residential and business ratepayers, and it would damage our most important asset - our natural environment. But Northern Pass has not defeated us. And it is only through continued grassroots effort that we will keep it out of our state.
I’ll be honest: It does not help me as a candidate to oppose Northern Pass. There are thousands in corporate donations I will not get. But as Governor of New Hampshire, it will be my job to focus on what is best for our state, and to lead.
We don’t need large-scale hydro or natural gas lines coming through New Hampshire to address our future energy needs. We can upgrade our electric grid, lower demand, and reduce costs by far more than Northern Pass ever would. And we empower small-scale wind and solar onto an upgraded grid in the process. It is good for ratepayers, renewable energy, our economy, and our environment.
Stand with me this Earth Day: Sign the petition. Join the thousands of New Hampshirites who know we can strengthen our economy and our environment - we don’t have to choose between the two. And help stop Northern Pass.
Steve
