French media is warned not to publish Emmanuel Macron leaks
“The commission (CNCCEP which apparently has authority over French elections) stresses that the dissemination or republication of such information, fraudulently obtained and which may, in all likelihood, have been mixed with false information, is liable to be classified as criminal in several respects for which its authors will be held responsible.”
The CNCCEP has asked the press and the public to remember the importance of the election and to act responsibly.
Also there is a law. “’Election authorities will prosecute internet users who pass on documents from massive En Marche! hack”’ En Marche is the slogan of Macron’s campaign
This Guardian article from May 6th repeats the French waring that some of the hacked material is false. Russia is expected to have done the hacking, so that’s a good guess. Apparently is the same Fancy Bear group that hacked the DNC is resonsible for the Macron hack.
Le Monde states it has seen some of the documents but will not publish the documents before the results of the election are known.
Nice to know there is a democracy that takes the honesty of campaign rhetoric seriously to the point of being held legally liable for liabling an opponent. And that the press has enough respect for their election process to not publicize stolen and unauthenticated material.
Sadly the US’s election process offers no such legal protecton from false attacks and it’s press has essentially not moral standards at all.
