With the announcement of FBI Director James Comey being fired today, which comes not even a full week after House Republicans decided to throw millions of Americans off their health insurance, many folks out there (especially you highly energized and motivated Kos readers!) are wondering what can be done. Petitions are circulating for special prosecutors, impeachment proceedings, more marches and protests, etc, but none of those things translate directly into the electoral power which fights back.
What does? Voter registration!
With the election of the new administration, many voters who stayed home are regretting doing so, and many others are regretting not even being registered to vote in the first place.
Of course, some people say “voting doesn’t matter.”
To that I ask “if voting didn’t matter, why is the GOP trying so hard to keep you from doing it?!”
Republicans have known for quite some time that when Democrats come out to vote, Democrats win. That’s why they have gone about systematically gutting the Voting Rights Act in the courts over the last few decades, and have been aggressively suppressing the vote with ever-restrictive voting laws to make it has hard for people to register and vote as possible.
Virginia has elections this year. We have congressional elections next year. If we want to build the kind of electorate that will bury the Republican lawmakers responsible for everything we’re seeing now, we need to register as many people as possible starting RIGHT NOW!
If you live in Virginia, organizations such as 90 for 90 and New Virginia Majority have your back. Join up with them; New Virginia Majority is hosting voter registration drives all throughout the commonwealth starting this weekend.
Always remember the folks throughout our nations history who fought, bled and died for our right to vote. We do them a disservice pay staying home, and we’re dooming ourselves to more of what we’re seeing now if we don’t get as many folks to vote as possible from here on out.
Our democracy is at stake, and it’s on us.
