Asked to respond to Donald Trump threatening James Comey on twitter Friday morning, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois called it out.
"I think we ought to get to the bottom line here: President Trump is dangerous. Dangerous because he may be obstructing justice in terms of the investigation that really goes to the heart of our democracy; the accountability of the President and the people around him; to the rule of law; protecting our democracy from an invasion — a cyber-invasion by the Russians."
Durbin added that Trump's credibility both here and around the world has been "destroyed" this week.
Yep. Couldn't agree more, which means it's time for Democrats to #ShutItDown until a special prosecutor is appointed. No new FBI director for Trump—the Acting FBI director Andrew McCabe will do just fine. No new judges—time to use those blue slips, Democrats. Basically, do anything and everything to force the special prosecutor issue with Republicans.
They are already privately admitting on Capitol Hill to reporters like Robert Costa that Trump's missteps this week have forced them into a corner even though they're still publicly walking a line. WSJ reporter Eli Stokols said some Republicans were complaining that Comey’s firing was turning into “the Benghazi of the Left,” meaning it would grind all legislation to a halt.
No time like the present for Democrats to force the issue and force it now.
Watch Durbin below the fold.
