OK, I admit that this is a bit tinfoil hat, but I think that there are elements in the Republican establishment who are currently working a scenario along these lines.
- Get Trump to destroy Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, largely by appealing to his vanity insecurity, and his paranoia.
- Engage in one of the two following scenarios:
- Wait for Trump to do something illegal, or manufacture it as Ken Starr did against Clinton in the 1990s.
- Start impeachment proceedings and remove him or force him to resign, replacing him with Mike Pence.
- Have Pence and his cabinet report that he is unable to fulfill his duties as president because he is batcrap insane, and have Pence become acting President.
- In response to efforts to reinstate Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, the talking point will be, “We got rid of the bad guy, we just need to fix it.”
This allows Republicans to achieve a cherished dream while pretending to be the heroes of the whole affair.
In this scenario, I would expect a timid response from the Democrats, particularly the Goldman Sachs/Bob Rubin/Corey Booker wing of the party, which would make things worse.
Anyway, that is my prediction.
