A joint effort between Oregon Humane Society and Lucy Pets brought 80 animals to OHS yesterday evening from Brazoria County, Texas, a community about 50 miles south of Houston. All 50 dogs and 30 cats were either voluntarily surrendered by their owners, were not microchipped, or went unclaimed for the 6 weeks since the hurricane. The county animal shelter was bursting at the seams so Humane Societies around the country have started to step in. I know some of you will wish they could have gone back to their rightful owners but when a family is barely able to keep their heads above water themselves (no pun intended), taking care of a pet becomes low priority. In the end, the most humane thing is to send these animals to loving homes. Here are a few photos from yesterday’s arrival at Portland International Airport:
If you’d like to donate to Oregon Humane Society to help support these efforts (and likely efforts from Florida and Northern California next) please donate here. Thank you!
