Jeff Flake’s statement about his appalling vote for the dystopian Trump budget was careful to mention that it “increases competitiveness”(Hopefully for that seat next year.Blue can be a lovely color.) Despite all the pretty nonsense about “freedom” and “simplicity” that make this horrible plan sound like a light cotton skirt, it’s just another corporate giveaway masquerading as simplicity. Also, if Senator Flake asked me, I would tell him there’s no “competitive”option for people with chronic conditions who rely on Medicare and Medicaid(such as myself for experiencing a lifelong mobility impairment), no market-based nutrition plan for hungry kids and seniors who need SNAP or Meals on Wheels, and the list goes on.
Government is big when needs are big. The Market rarely cares about those people. People like me. I always thought America did ,though. Through my many adversities, I always believed, despite my diminished platform or prospects, that I was still a citizen, accorded a certain baseline support, maybe even respect.
Now, as with disaster relief and so many other issues, my faith in my nation has been eroded. Will I get it back? Hard to say, since even the people that aspire to be leaders are busy grooming themselves to get the best spotlight as things crumble. If a budget is truly a “snapshot ofnational priorities” as some smarter person than I once wrote, then Arizonans should find the view of the man behind the toothy, laid-back façade to be disturbing indeed.
