I got bullied a lot when I was in grade school. Part of the reason was that I was a year younger than the other kids in my class. I didn’t skip a grade, but my parents put me in kindergarten almost a year early. I guess I was a smarty pants.
Anyway, several times during school, the verbal abuse would get so bad that I’d have to run to the bathroom to cry. One time during recess, a classmate extended his hand, asking if I wanted a “truce” during a game of four-square. I said yes, and put out my hand to shake. He grabbed it and spat in it. Wahhhh
When I got into boarding school for high school, I was relieved to learn that they had strict rules against hazing and bullying. I remember being teased in my 8th grade class about something, and responding,, “Guess what - bullying isn’t allowed where I am going next year”. And the teacher, yes the TEACHER was like, “Yeah, right. Good luck with that.” And everybody snickered. That was a scary moment.
I resolved to not be a dork at boarding school. And as it turned out, I became friends with many of the ‘cool’ kids, and never again felt like the outcast I did in grade school. There was one anti-Semitic kid in my dorm who would throw pennies on the ground and say, “Pick it up, Jew”. But lots of people didn’t like him, so it wasn’t all that traumatizing. Fun fact: his father was a school trustee!
I was happy, yesterday, to see this tweet from movie star Chris Evans to a bullied kid whose video went viral:
Sweet revenge.
What about you?
Were you bullied in school?
