I agree it’s not productive to engage in “debates” with those who ignore facts and logic.
But here’s a suggestion for possibly getting some of them at least to think for a minute. Responding to a pro-Trump or pro-Republican comment, try this:
Do you have any idea how much they are screwing you and your family?
Then leave the conversation.
(Depending on the context, you may need to change “they” to “Republicans” or “Trump” or “Trumpers,” but I like “they” if it’s clear enough.)
My responses have ranged from silence to “Hillary would have been worse,” to of course, “Fuck you libtard snowflake scum Al Franken Seth Rich Uranium.”
But Republican theology is based on the fiction Democrats are taking your taxes and giving them to the poor, especially minorities. The evidence this is bullshit is piling up through the tax bill and ACA repeal attempts. Previously, Republicans have said they didn’t believe their party would actually carry out their lethal program. It’s harder for them to do that when it’s now in plain sight.
Of course, the power of racism still likely overrides self-interest for most.
But anything we can do to plant a whisper of rebuttal to the fiction is progress.
I’m as skeptical as anyone this or anything will make a difference.
But this or something else merits at least a try.
Remember, this is not a debating point or part of a give and take on issues (only possible in extremely rare instances, if at all).
I’d also like to see other suggestions. See the poll.
