Good morning GUSspringiscominglings! I’m guessing many of you know Hans Christian Andersen’s story, “The Little Mermaid” before Disney ruined it for a million generations. It is pretty dark — like the Grimms’ Fairy Tales before they got sanitized.
Needless to say, the music was stirring, the story differed from the “The Little Mermaid” in that Rusalka kills the Prince with a kiss, not a knife. In the Anderson story, the Prince is not killed at all. There’s a dispute between my opera buddy and I whether or not she returns to the sea or is doomed to wander the earth in misery. I say doomed. No happy ending.
The interviews between the two acts and two scenes in the second act were fantastic. One was with the Director, Mary Zimmerman. I wish I could get a transcript of that interview. Not only did she create multiple worlds — fantasy/beautiful, awakening, earthly palace and fantasy/destroyed — she explained why Rusalka couldn't experience passion (until the end) and the Prince tossed her like an old sack of potatoes. The futility of idealized imaginings. They never work out. That’s not Mary’s words — she was brilliant.
Lots of Wagner, Puccini and Tchiakovsky bits here and there — but in the end, pure Dvorak at his most beautiful. The conductor, Sir Mark Elder clearly adores this piece. I do now as well. Musically soaringly gorgeous and soul piercingly painful.
And I can’t believe YouTube already has Opolais’ aria “Song to the Moon.” Cut off too soon maybe because this is from the dress rehearsal. It gives you a feel for the production. I am also including the wonderful Renee Flemming’s rendition done in concert.
I am struggling to place the Puccini melody incorporated in this aria — and am at a loss. Some might remember this aria was in “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Remember that quitting is not an imaginary ideal. It is something attainable through effort, determination and with the support of good buddies. Also, after 3 months, you will sound like Renee Flemming and can get a gig at the Metropolitan opera!
Cheers my dears.
