Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D. NY):
I can't begin to imagine the bravery it takes for a 19-year-old victim of sexual assault to report the crime, only to face the devastating helplessness of not being believed.
Every time this scenario plays out, it’s a devastating injustice – but too often, that’s exactly what happens at colleges and universities across the country. Many schools sweep sexual assault under the rug, leaving survivors without justice – and leaving assailants free to commit future crimes.
We’ve been fighting for years to address this problem, and we’re not going to give up now. That’s why I just reintroduced the Campus Accountability and Safety Act, a bipartisan effort to ensure schools protect their students and rid their campuses of sexual predators.
The only way we’ll pass this bill is with an outpouring of grassroots support, so I need you to make your voice heard now. Sign the petition to demand Congress act to end campus sexual assault!
Add your name and tell Congress: Pass the Campus Accountability and Safety Act to protect students from sexual assault.
Right now, our system is dangerously backwards: Colleges and universities are rewarded for keeping campus sexual assault in the shadows. This bill would flip the incentives to encourage schools to do more to protect students and establish new resources to help student survivors.
I know that you believe as strongly as I do that we can’t keep turning a blind eye to this problem. Over the past few months, we’ve seen how powerful our voices can be – now, we need to speak out with everything we have to urge Congress to pass this bill immediately.
Will you sign the petition right now and tell Congress to pass the Campus Accountability and Safety Act to end the epidemic of campus sexual assault?
Thank you for standing with survivors and making your voice heard.
Kirsten
