The latest news about Donald Trump and Russia is stunning, even for this president. The Washington Post just reported that Trump "revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador" when he met with them last week in the White House.
At the same time, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are trying to shut down the investigation into the administration's dealings with Russia -- and if Senate Democrats don't step up immediately, they might just get away with it.
The appointment of a special prosecutor is a crucial step towards getting to the bottom of this story -- and toward impeaching Donald Trump. That's why DFA is joining many of our progressive allies to call on Senate Democrats to fight to make sure that this investigation continues.
Can you sign our petition now calling on Senate Democrats to shut down the Senate until a special prosecutor is appointed to investigate Trump?
It is becoming increasingly clear that FBI Director James Comey was fired by Donald Trump in order to cover up potentially impeachable offenses committed by this administration. Every day, Trump's messaging on the firing gets more and more erratic and unhinged.
At first, the administration claimed that Comey was fired because he improperly handled the Clinton email investigation. But in a one-on-one interview with Lester Holt of NBC News, Trump said that Comey was let go for being a "showboat" and a "grandstander" -- and then, he took to Twitter to shockingly imply that he had recorded conversations with Comey that would back him up.
Congress needs to get to the bottom of this situation NOW. Appointing a special prosecutor would move us closer to holding Donald Trump accountable for his actions -- and potentially beginning impeachment hearings. But Congressional Republicans are already dismissing the need for a special investigator, despite the overwhelmingly clear evidence that only an independent party will be able to do what it takes to enforce the law.
Democrats have the power to slow business in the Senate to an absolute crawl by withholding unanimous consent. This would make it nearly impossible for Republicans to make headway on their agenda until they appoint a special prosecutor to take over the Russia investigation.
Tell Senate Democrats to take bold action to get to the bottom of the Trump/Russia investigation: Shut down the Senate until a special prosecutor is appointed.
Senate Democrats have been pushing for further investigation into Trump's dealings with Russia. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says there won't be a vote to confirm a new FBI Director until a special prosecutor is appointed -- and he has called on the Trump administration to hand over any tapes of himself and Comey that he may be hiding.
But these calls are not enough. Anything short of a completely and total shutdown of the legislative process will fail to alter the actions of the GOP leadership, who are deeply invested in keeping this administration in power.
Republicans are trying to change the subject right now -- to move policy forward that would distract from this investigation. If they succeed, we may never know the extent to which the current administration is compromised or corrupted. And we may never have the evidence we need to impeach Donald Trump.
Tell Senate Democrats to stand up for justice and shut everything down until a special prosecutor is appointed to investigate Donald Trump.
Thanks for pushing Senate Democrats to stand up for our democracy.
