What a swell fellow!
Darrell Issa is not holding up well under the pressure. Last year, he only barely won re-election against an unheralded opponent by a mere 0.5 percent margin—the closest House race in the nation. What’s more, California’s 49th District, which is based in the San Diego suburbs, had long been a conservative seat, but it reacted with great hostility toward Trump: Mitt Romney carried the district 52-46 but it swung sharply toward Hillary Clinton, who won it 51-43.
That’s very bad news for Issa, who will face another tough campaign next year. The bad news for us, though, is that Issa is exceedingly wealthy—and has used his influence during his long tenure in Congress to make himself wealthier—so whoever emerges as the Democratic standard-bearer in this race is going to need a lot of help to finally finish the job.
