If there was ever a time for a modern pope to take a stand in world affairs this is it.
As Air Force One cruises toward Rome, it seems clear this is a serene moment for the Vatican to prepare a strong, meaningful statement to the world.
Soon, one of the most respected (and deserving) spiritual leaders of the modern world will meet the most morally suspect, materialistic leader of a major world power in recent history. And it’s not as if they both don’t know something of what they’re getting into and are about to present to the world.
It is imperative that Pope Francis issue a clear, direct and broad censure of the policies and moral direction of this self-invited Visitor. Absent that, he will disillusion many of his faithful who look to him with admiration, moral guidance and as a model of sanctity.
I doubt he will fail the occasion. He knows the plight of immigrants worldwide, criticized the border wall and was insulted in return. But, we never know how the Visitor’s actions will play out in this universe of opposites.
Pope Francis should.
