You know, it always sounds so romantic to say you're a “child of the 60’s”. Just that phrase alone conjures up images of hippies “dropping in and dropping out” in Haight-Ashbury, Janis Joplin performing at Woodstock, sit-ins and protests of our involvement in the Vietnam War. However, there were other events that took place during that time that still resonate today.
In 1963, Martin Luther King led marches against segregation (which led to him and hundreds of protestors being jailed in Birmingham) and 250,000 joined in his March on Washington demanding the passage of the Civil Rights Act (CRA). The CRA, which was signed in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act, (VRA), which was signed the following year are still under attack by the Republican Party and we cannot afford to stand by and do nothing. The only sure way to take back our country from the alt-right is to Get The Vote Out! Unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy. We do, however, have some wonderful organizations and people on our side. We have Let America Vote, headed by Jason Kander (@Let_AmericaVote), the Civil Rights Organization (@civilrightsorg) and Rock the Vote (@RockTheVote) to name just a few. We also have our Democratic Party that has a voter registration division
Also, we have the youth. Not only are the millennials (and the generation after them) more tolerant, they are also less likely to be indoctrinated into a formal religion. These new (or soon to be) voters have friends and classmates of every race, religion and sexual identity. They are less likely to be racist, bigoted, or a religious extremist. They have never known a time when abortion was not legal or when blacks could not marry whites. They are what we need to keep our country going in the right direction.
