We can write blogs all day and sign digital petitions and answer “surveys” that take us to donation sites to get us added to yet more e-mailing lists to get more information about how much the government is being wrecked.
But the Republicans didn’t take control of the government just by whipping up their base. They also garnered many tens of millions more in contributions and dark money.
How do you think they took control of state houses, governorships, both Houses of Congress, the White House, and by theft, the Supreme Court? By having their base sign digital petitions? No! They did it with money — the only commodity that gets you things you want. It was used to prop up fake news empires, smear ad campaigns, distort the truth through 24-hour media blitzes across all forms, and taking large donations from rich corporations and private individuals to pay for it all. In exchange, they pass policies to keep themselves in power (voter suppression laws, map-rigging/gerrymandering) and give large tax breaks to these corporations, and many times even create subsidies to give our taxpayer dollars to already-profitable corporations. Last I knew, the average return on their campaign dollars was that for $1 they spent, they received an average of $100 back — a 10,000% return on investment! That’s a business person’s dream!
The Democrats do a lot of glad-handing and legislation for big corporations in exchange for money, too. Just not quite as blatantly and they try to moderate their actions with counter-balancing measures much of the time. For instance, Joe Biden was a credit card company hack (he represented Delaware where almost every credit card in your wallet is based) and he voted for the Bankruptcy overhaul which made it harder for people in credit card debt to declare bankruptcy. This was only one of many votes like that he made for the credit card companies. And it’s just one Democratic senator and just one an example. But on the other side of the coin, he was a staunch supporter of public employee unions, labor rights, civil rights legislation, and many other good, good, things.
If you want to take the country bank, the place to start, unfortunately, it the one place you probably don’t want to start. Your wallet.
Donate money to the Democratic Party or one of its Committees or your state level party. We are being outspent by wide margins with dark money. Yeah, yeah, 7% in Montana. Yeah, yeah, Georgia. We haven’t won any of these special elections. The pundits spinning it that we setting up for a great 2018 are just dropping peanut turds out of their face anuses (to bastardize a phrase from Veep). The fact is that in Montana, Democrats were outspent by 400%. In Georgia, we will be outspent, too. I am not expecting Mr. Ossoff to win, polls be damned. Maybe he will pull a rabbit out of a hat. To win these days, unfortunately, takes money. Bigly money. The biggest.
Don’t just give money to anyone. Give the money in an organized way so that it can be strategically spent:
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
Democratic National Committee
Or consider a donation to your state-level party or directly to a candidate that you want to see win. Bernie raised as much as Hillary Clinton off small contributions. So do the one thing that’s hardest to do: get out your debit card, log in, and make a donation.
