As seen on Trump Tweets, the new excuse for why Trump–Russia should be ignored is one of the old excuses for why Trump–Russia should be ignored.
“Russian officials must be laughing at the U.S. & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News.”
The Russians are clearly excited about managing to cripple the United States for less than the cost of a single missile, but the current talking point from Trump central—that the investigation is only to assuage wounded Democratic pride—has clearly been delivered to all the reliable cronies, like Rep. Devin Nunes.
“The Democrats don’t want an investigation on Russia. They want an independent commission. Why do they want an independent commission? Because they want to continue the narrative that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are best friends, and that’s the reason that he won, because Hillary Clinton would have never lost on her own; it had to be someone else’s fault,” [Devin Nunes] told Republicans at the $75-per-plate Tulare County Lincoln Dinner on April 7. His remarks were recorded on video and provided to The Times.
Nunes is still ostensibly the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, though he had to recuse himself from leading the investigation into Trump–Russia after his game of follow-the-leader with Trump destroyed his last shred of dignity. That time it was “unmasking,” which was supposed to serve as a distraction. Now we’re back to “it’s all about Hillary.”
Never say that Donald Trump isn’t an environmentalist at heart: he even recycles excuses.
Considering his previous round of skulking in the White House bushes, it would be interesting to know how Devin Nunes received his marching orders this time around. Did he leap from a car, dash to a secret meeting at the White House, hold a press conference, talk to Paul Ryan, go back to tell the White House what the White House told him, hold another press conference, and slink away in shame? Because that would be neat.
But Nunes does have some Nu-news for everyone: Democrats are trying to destroy the Russia investigation.
“They have tried to destroy this Russia investigation, they’ve never been serious about it, and one of the great things now that I’ve stepped aside from this Russia investigation, I can actually say what I want to say. I know that there’s probably media in here, you can write it but just try to get it right when you do,” he said.
Yes. All along it’s been Democrats who were out to foil the investigation by asking questions about Russia, rather than spending every second on the horrors of unmasking, or leaping from cars. How are Democrats trying to block the investigation? By calling for an independent commission, rather than continuing the farce of an investigation led by Devin Nunes.
Thank God we have Devin Nunes to tell us when people are being serious.
