Republicans are making a desperate effort to tie Jon Ossoff to Kathy Griffin—and I do mean desperate. But Ossoff’s response shows just how strong a candidate he is, jamming the attack right back in their faces.
The Congressional Leadership Fund has come out with a new ad describing Griffin as “a celebrity Jon Ossoff supporter,” even though the only way Griffin has supported Ossoff was by retweeting Alyssa Milano on March 27. But wait, there’s more. The group also piously claimed that “Jon Ossoff has refused to denounce his supporter Kathy Griffin for over 48 hours.”
But Ossoff had not been asked any questions about Griffin, said Ossoff spokeswoman Sacha Haworth. TMZ published the photo on Tuesday at 1:53 p.m. Eastern. Six hours later, Griffin released a short video apologizing for the photo and promising to scrap any future use of it.
So Jon Ossoff did not, in the six hours between Griffin’s photo going public and Griffin apologizing, answer a question that he was not asked, even though she tweeted about him that one time. That’s the level of attacks Republicans are going with right now. And Ossoff completely owned them in response, calling on his Republican opponent, Karen Handel, to “'immediately demand this ad be pulled before any more children have to see these disturbing images on TV.”
But the Congressional Leadership Fund has a lot of money for these attacks, and this race could be decided by the narrowest of margins. Even the flimsiest, most desperate attack could make a meaningful difference.
Can you chip in $3 to help Jon Ossoff fight back against ugly attacks like this?
