I wrote this open letter to President Donald Trump after news broke that he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord. This decision would be catastrophic for New York City and our country and we must fight back. Click here to sign onto my letter to President Trump and urge him to reverse his decision.
Dear President Donald Trump,
Your announcement today to Withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord is beyond disheartening. It’s appalling.
This action sacrifices the United States’ position as a global leader, threatens the sustainability of our planet, and weakens our ability to combat climate change -- one of the greatest threats facing our population today -- all to score political points with the world’s biggest polluters and special interest groups.
We must do everything we can to leave the planet in good condition for future generations. Scientists have repeatedly warned that if we don’t take action to seriously combat climate change now, we could reach a catastrophic environmental tipping point in the next several decades. I’m deeply concerned by what that could mean for my two children -- and all our children — and I want to take every action to prevent it now.
Many of us have fought for years to preserve and protect the environment of New York and create a cleaner, greener world. We will keep the pressure on to make sure our city is doing everything in our power to combat climate change, but your decision undermines this work and makes it impossible for the United States to remain a leader on this vital issue.
I’m calling on you to reverse your decision and ensure that the United States remains an active and vocal participant in the Paris Climate Accord.
Preserve the Paris Climate Accord.
Protect the environment.
