Well Donald Trump did it yesterday, he publicly condemned science, the business community and logic. Who was pleased, Vladimir Putin and Syria. I spent yesterday morning on the road and spoke to Trump supporters in anticipation of his Paris Climate decision. I heard a lot of, “he is keeping his promise, he is doing it for the American people, he represents all of us.” So, I informed, what seemed like a very nice woman, that the last American census counted approximately 333 million residents, of those about 129 million voted in the last election, less than half for Mr. Trump. Her response was, “numbers lie.” I did not even bother with the 97 percent of the scientific community argument about climate change. I watched her walk to her car in the parking lot, wondering if she would stick her feet out of the bottom to break at the first stop light she encountered.
In an instant it hit me, stop wasting time with people who do not want to be reached. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper apologized on air a few weeks ago for suggesting to Trump apologist Jeffrey Lord that he who would defend President Trump if, “he took a dump” on his desk. Anderson looked mortified immediately after the crude lament and you could see in his eyes, recrimination, for not only making the comment but for being dragged into the muck.
The saddest part of the exchange is that it reminded me of the almost evil delight conservatives take in defying logic and common sense at the expense of liberals. Donald Trump after the House of Representatives’ vote potentially endangering 23 million lives by removing healthcare, partied on the White House lawn. He followed that up yesterday by having jazz music played as an intro for his plan to endanger the planet. The irony of his statement that the world won’t be laughing at us anymore, was completely lost on him http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-40128556/trump-world-won-t-laugh-any-more.
That was not only a message to the world but to the citizens of our country that the reins of the United States government are being handled by a political incompetent and we are galloping toward the cliff.
Has the us versus them so overtaken the Republican Party that all sense of real patriotism has left? I don’t mean displaying a flag bumper sticker on your car or not listening to the words of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA.’ I mean the kind of love for country that made a Black man like former President Barack Obama, put love for America over pride. A country that showed scant regard for his ancestry or mine and used his talents, patience and tolerance for the betterment of his country. The same voters who questioned his [Obama] religion, his loyalty and his citizenship are now backing a man who in the span of 5 months; named a potential Russian asset as his Security adviser; courted, supported and appointed a man with questionable, at best, racial animus as the head of the Justice Department and yesterday restocked the swamp with piranha. Remember that swamp he promised to drain? He gave waivers to select White House staff members, who may have personal business conflicts, the right to conduct policy on America’s dime http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/white-house-staff-waivers-ethics_us_592f9f45e4b0540ffc8473c6.
State those facts to a Trump supporter and their response may make you want to take Anderson Copper’s suggestion on their heads.
Vote in 18’ And Change.
