Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Chris Murphy’s (D. CT) re-election campaign:
Yesterday, President Trump announced his plan to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement. The president’s decision to turn our back on the global effort to fight climate change is short-sighted, ill-informed and immoral.
This announcement makes us one of just three countries not to be a part of this historic action to combat climate change. Of the other two, Nicaragua didn’t sign because they felt the deal did not go far enough and Syria is embroiled in a violent civil war. By making this choice, President Trump assured that we stand alone in walking away from the coordinated effort to stop the catastrophic warming of our planet.
President Trump’s decision is the wrong one, but we are not powerless to fight back. Right now, Mayors, Governors and businesses across the country are committing to meet the goals laid out in the Paris Agreement.
Add your name if you agree that states, cities and businesses should continue their commitment to renewable energy and environmental justice.
As temporary occupants on this earth, it is our duty to leave it to our children and grandchildren in as good a condition as we found it. But climate change will have catastrophic consequences if it continues unchecked. Sea levels will rise, crops will fail and natural disasters will become stronger and more frequent. It’s not hyperbole to say that people will die.
But this doesn’t need to be our fate. We can choose to invest in cleaner ways to power our planet. We can create millions of jobs in emerging renewable energy industries as the rest of the world transitions to clean power. Or, we can shrink our leadership and cede the future to countries like China and Russia who will gladly step up to fill the void left by the United States.
We know which path the president has chosen. But we can choose our own.
The United States can continue to lead the fight against climate change even without the president. Add your name to urge states, cities and companies to continue their commitment to renewable energy.
The irony of it all is that I suspect the president doesn't know the first thing about the Paris Agreement or any of its details. If he did, he would have never made this disastrous, immoral decision.
All my best,
Senator Chris Murphy
