For the first time in human history, and for the first time in human evolutionary experience, our species is attempting to understand and limit the damage we have done and are doing to the global ecosystem. We now understand that we cannot restore the planet to its pristine state before humans started their destructive path, but we can work toward preserving the natural beauty and wonder of our biosphere and try seriously to keep the planet from becoming uninhabitable. That’s a daunting goal and a fundamental change in our strategy as a species.
Donald Trump doesn’t understand this, and neither do the people who support him. He knows and they know the price of everything and the value of nothing except that they both ignore the price and cost of their ignorance.
In Barbara Tuchman’s great book, The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam, she described how various governments and organizations made catastrophic and fatal decisions in spite of having all the information they needed to make the right decision.
Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreements on climate action would provide a perfect chapter for Tuchman’s book. It will be seen in history (starting soon!) as one of the most profoundly mistaken decisions by any government or by any leader. It will undoubtedly hasten fatal derangement of the biosphere upon which all of us depend for life. The probable consequences are horrifying, tragic beyond words, and will be incomprehensible in the terrible result.
The global catastrophe of Donald Trump is the direct result of the 2016 election and the choice made by 63 million voters of the United States – less than 1% of the global human population – along with those who didn’t care enough to vote or couldn’t vote for Hillary because she did not cause them to tremble with excitement the way Bernie made them tremble.
Trump's colossal stupidity supported by rich white male Republican robots abandons truth, facts, civilization, the future, and the life support systems of the planet not to mention any moral credibility the United States might have left after the first four months of his catastrophic administration. As long as Trump and his Republican accomplices are in charge of anything, there is no hope for the country or for the future of the planet.
H.G. Wells said that civilization is a race between education and extinction. Guess which side Donald Trump is on?
