The speculation regarding a potential run for Governor has come to an end, as Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State has announced his intent to become the next Governor.
Secretary of State Kris Kobach has been a very controversial figure, not just in Kansas but nationwide. He was the author of the Arizona SB1070 legislation, known as “papers please”. Referred to by some as a nativist, Kobach is also associated with early plans by President Trump for a Muslim registry, and is considered one of the lead advocates for the Muslim travel ban.
Kris Kobach, Kansas’ secretary of state who says he is advising the Trump transition team on immigration policies, told Reuters Tuesday that confidants to the president-elect are discussing proposals to reinstate a registry for immigrants from Muslim countries. Kobach, whose name has been floated for a possible Cabinet position, said he was involved in regular calls with immigration advisers about the issue.
Kobach has been a staunch supporter of conservative voter suppression policies, having provided resources to several Republican states in their efforts, including Nebraska, Arizona, Ohio, North Carolina and elsewhere.

He’s coached legislators across the country in their efforts to pass dozens of similar measures, ranging from Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri to the small town of Fremont, Nebraska, pop. 26,000. His record has helped propel him into elected office, becoming Kansas’ secretary of state just six months after the passage of Arizona’s SB 1070.
That was in 2012. Kobach’s work since then has taken a larger platform, creating the national Cross-Check program that has been tied to removing hundreds of thousands of voters from the voting rolls.

This inherent bias results in an astonishing one in six Hispanics, one in seven Asian-Americans and one in nine African-Americans in Crosscheck states landing on the list. Was the program designed to target voters of color? "I'm a data guy," Swedlund says. "I can't tell you what the intent was. I can only tell you what the outcome is. And the outcome is discriminatory against minorities."
Kobach highlights as one of his major issues a fight against illegal immigration, combined with a call for state term limits.

Strong borders are essential to our nation and to our State. They are essential to fighting terrorism, essential to fighting crime, and essential to protecting American workers. And the only way to combat a problem as severe as a lawless immigration system is to have action at both the federal and the state level.
Unfortunately, Kansas has become the sanctuary state of the Midwest. We are the only state in the 5-state area that has done nothing to discourage illegal immigration.
Early polling puts Kobach far ahead of other Republican candidates for the seat, setting up an interesting 2018 in Kansas.

Update:
At Kobach’s announcement, he revealed that the reason for Kansas budget problem was due to $424M spent yearly on services to “illegal immigrants”. He has clearly decided to base his campaign on the message of otherism.
