Do you have any secret hiding places?
I had no private spaces to call my own as a kid, other than the trees I climbed. I couldn’t have a room of my own, but I asked my brother-in-law, who would get me anything I asked for within reason (usually from a swap-meet) for something I could keep my “valuables” safely locked away in. He built me a small wooden lockbox, large enough to for a notebook and small items. I painted it blue and found a combination lock for it.
I’d had a little girl’s diary with a tiny lock that I kept in a drawer, but this now seemed too childish a repertoire for real secrets. I started a new notebook that day, in which I wrote down my shocked and sorrowful response to the assassination of Robert Kennedy. I locked it carefully away, along with the pocket knife I wasn’t supposed to have and then slid the box into the back of the closet. Oddly enough, Mom approved of this new secrecy. She had been reading Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs which told her that if you have a Scorpio child you should give her a locked box.
But this, now: This is a truly creative series of hidey-holes!
Have you ever had any secret hiding places? A creative place where you’ve hidden your house key? A hollowed out book, a false stairwell tread, or (the material of a Nancy Drew mystery) la false bottom in a drawer or suitcase? Buried treasure in the back yard? I have a friend who is convinced that when the apocalypse/breakdown of society comes he’ll be fine because he’s got gold buried in the back yard that he can locate via GPS. It’s not hard to pick out the flaws in that plan.
To this day we still have a little locked chest hidden away in the basement, but I’m not going to tell you what’s in it. It’s a sekrit.
