Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Angus King’s (I. ME) re-election campaign:
I was deeply disappointed by President Trump’s announcement that he plans to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)program.
The “Dreamers” protected under DACA arrived in our country through no fault of their own, brought by their parents as young children.Dreamers have grown up here, and many now have their own children. They’re college students, lawyers, computer programmers. They’re regular, hard-working Americans who contribute to our economy, who pay taxes and who have been part of our communities for years and years.
Losing DACA protections would mean losing the ability to receivefinancial aid to attend college, to support families, to get healthinsurance and even to drive legally. It could expose nearly 700,000young people to deportation to countries many of them can’t evenremember. As one young woman put it, “Taking DACA away is takingeverything from us.”
While I am upset that the Trump administration has chosen to rescind this program, I believe Congress now has an important opportunity and responsibility to act on meaningful immigration reform. I hope Congress will take this chance to cooperate and find along-term legislative solution to protect these Dreamers from deportation. Will you join me in calling on Congress to act?
Please add your voice: Tell Congress that it’s time for meaningful immigration reform.
I don’t agree with President Trump’s decision here, but I dobelieve his past statements – and even recent Tweets – show that thisis an issue he struggles with.
He has clearly indicated that he wants Congress to work onimmigration, and I think his DACA announcement is an effort to set thestage to finally get something done on this important issue.
This is a chance for Congress to act on our country’s values. It’sa chance to support young people who want to work and liveproductively in the country we all call home. Please add your name totell Congress that Dreamers need to see action:
Add your name to tell Congress to move on immigration and protect Dreamers.
Thanks so much.
