OK, it’s getting too late to evacuate, and shaming the hurricane holdouts won’t do any good now either. So let’s get to work devising some hacks, McGivers, workarounds, and tweaks to get folks through the next few days of high water, wind, and hell.
To start the discussion, I’m throwing out a real scenario: You’re in an RV campground 10 feet above sea level and 10 miles from downtown Naples and the Ocean. You’re holed up in a 25 year old mobile home rated for maybe 100 MPH winds, assuming the 25 year old tie downs haven’t rusted away, and the floor’s at about the 100 year flood plain elevation. You pulled an all nighter last night, just woke up, and now the forecast has taken a serious turn for the worse- 120 MPH sustained winds, 15 inches of rain, and an 8 to 12 foot storm surge. It’s startin’ to rain and winds are gusting just above 30 MPH.
Shelter may still be open two miles away, but your car won’t start… What the hell ya gonna do?
