Representative Kennedy did an amazing job last night. He gave an eloquent, emotional response that evoked the best aspirations of our country. It was a stark contrast to the prior 80 minutes of prejudice and war mongering that was presented to the country.
Buried in that 80 minutes, though, was an extremely dangerous idea that struck a nerve with me. The President asked Congress to empower cabinet secretaries to fire employees who “undermine the public trust or fail the American people”. This was the most dangerous attack on our country levied during that speech.
Our federal employees are hard working people dedicated to the principles of this country, not to any one person. We serve alongside people of all political ideologies, but are united in working to better the country we love. Threatening to fire people based on their politics undermines the entire idea of federal service.
So here’s my response. If you like what you see, help fund our campaign, follow the campaign on the social media platform of your choice, and help us flip Georgia’s 3rd District blue!
PS, I can’t hang around in the comments thread, I’ve got a campaign kick off to attend for a local school board candidate, sorry. I’ll check it when I can and get back to people, though.
