Response to “Another Hoax Pwning...”
Good diary. Concur with your view of how many supposedly astute individuals can easily be hoaxed. How? Could it be that many think that they are too “intelligent” to be fooled/scammed? I am not surprised that public Education in our nation has become more mediocre with each passing academic year. The more arrogant one is because of his/her academic achievements and/or recognition (e.g., title, grades, etc.) the less capable one is of seeing/understanding how life changes. The quagmire that exists within the current administration is an example of what can happen when one becomes too smug.
Much of the BS that passes for critical discourse is no more than just BS with a cherry on top. And some of the very best purveyors of the BS are the very same “tenured academics”. They can talk the talk but they can’t walk the walk. Why? Because they are really good with theory but are clueless when they have to put theory into practice. And, IMHO, if one is unable to do what one teaches/preaches, one’s oral expressions are no more than empty words.
IMHO, the vast majority of the individuals who occupy the “ivory towers” of Academia shouldn’t be allowed to set one foot on any post-secondary campus until they’ve experienced the Real world outside the halls of Academia. The academics (i.e., teachers, professors) who have had to struggle in order to take care of just their basic needs learn first-hand the relevance of the disciplines to real life that a well-rounded post-secondary preparatory program can be. Theory is, I feel, very important. However, theory should be based on empirically verifiable phenomena rather than gratuitous word play in an attempt to impress others.
