The Christian Right sent a gentleman festering sphincter to canvass in my neighborhood. He lives in Carmel, CA, part of the Eden referred to in Steinbeck’s East of Eden. My neighborhood on the other hand, is very diverse and very blue. I’m not sure why he and his group bothered to come to Seaside, and how scared he was to park his Mercedes on a street which has mostly Hispanic and Asian families.
I still think it is worth pointing out that they do bother. They bother in reliably blue Monterey County and majority blue California, and in every district in the country. Do they bother because they are delusional? Because they are beside themselves with fear? Because they are stubborn? Because they assume they are right no matter what and if they are on record as being for/against certain things they get bonus points with the Big Guy? I think it’s worth pointing out that we have to work twice as hard, because they are not giving up to the bitter end.
His oldrichwhiteguy “Moral Values Voter Guide” has value to me for the simple reason that it is a “perfect reverse barometer” of how to vote in my county. Candidates they rate the “worst” are clearly the best and vice-versa. Here is their agenda in a nutshell:
Moral Concerns Committee
Vote Biblical and Constitutional
Pro-life, Pro-Traditional Marriage, & Pro-2nd Amendment
Smaller Government and Lower Taxes.
There is also a pro/con Sanctuary Cities column on the flier.
It is interesting that in some instances, two candidates have exactly the same stances on the issues this group cares about and the choices seem to be; whites over Hispanics or blacks, and men over women. Who could have foreseen that would be the case?
I don’t remember the scriptural basis for Jesus’s opinion on the 2nd Amendment, but I’m pretty sure he had a different opinion about sanctuaries even if they were entire cities.
I first asked the canvasser if I could make copies and further disseminate his voter guide and got an enthusiastic yes. I tried to draw him into further discussion to see if he would implicate tRump or Faux Newz for stoking him to walk around distributing hate-based literature in public, but he was cagey and seemed in a hurry. When I thanked him for saving us “friends of humanity” some time by doing the research for us, he started to look confused. When I said, “because now we know exactly how to vote; by doing the exact opposite of what you want, in every case,” he got very flustered and upset to the point where he forgot to retract his agreement that I could disseminate his bilge to a wider audience. So, here you go! Sorry I couldn’t get pp 2 & 3 the right size.
