Since trump uses this and similar phrases a lot, we should consider the true meaning behind it. It is clear that he does not consider anyone opposed to him to be “a real American” ( to use Sara Palin’s phrase) much less a real human. When he talks about “the people” he visualizes a subset of the whole — just people like him and especially just him.
In fact, these and other stock denunciations from mr. big can readily be considered as mere dog whistles. They are intended to sound harmless but have pejorative intent, addressed to people in the know. For example, consider what his base would hear contrasted to what they are trained to interpret:
1) enemy of the people = enemy of conservative republican people
2) real American = right wing only
Do you see how this works? Strangely enough these statements and accusations are mostly true, but for reasons which are not obvious at first. There are a great many “enemies of the people” according to the definition #1 above.
The media, to the extent that they keep me accurately informed and is slammed by republicans for doing so, would definitely be on the great one’s list.
“Enemy of the people” Remember that this statement is only partially true as is. You must mentally insert a few extra words to make it completely so.
