It’s my tradition —
a haiku diary to
welcome the New Year.
Haiku rules:
Five syllables first,
seven in the second line,
back to five again.
The old year was full
of disasters — hate ruled, kids
were locked up and died,
A rapist installed
another rapist on the
high court of the land
while a brave woman
made other women brave to
tell their own stories
and a lot of men
ganged up and showed their anger
at the disruption.
But I found my hope
in the Parkland kids, who said
kids count more than guns,
in the women of
color who ran and will become
a force in the House,
in the wonderful
people I’ve met and worked with
fighting injustice.
