Secretary Shulkin made it clear today why he’s being removed. If you’re out of your article limit, here’s the heart of the disagreement.
That is because I am convinced that privatization is a political issue aimed at rewarding select people and companies with profits, even if it undermines care for veterans.
We cannot allow the V.A. to become privatized. When we ask men and women to go to war for our nation, we bear the burden of their care when we return. War is cruelty, and everyone involved carries scars of war.
These scars are not a source of profit.
If we can’t bear the cost of caring for our returning veterans, we should not send them to war in the first place. If we choose to avoid diplomatic solutions to our disputes, we must be willing to care for those who fight. This isn’t a regulatory imperative, but a moral one. It goes to the core of who we are as a nation and what values we hold.
The replacement of Secretary Shulkin with RADM Jackson is intended to hasten the destruction of the V.A. We can’t let that happen.
