I served in Korea and participated in a few of those "very provocative" exercises. Guess what? They're meant to be provocative. Part of power projection is doing joint exercises or other shows of force. It's the same principle behind Russian jets doing close passes on US carriers, F-14s intercepting Bear bombers, and China rehearsing a Taiwan invasion.
POTUS has verbally agreed to stop a major form of power projection on the Korean Peninsula. He is treating a regime that murders family members, enslaves generations for political slights, kidnaps, tortures, and rules almost exclusively through human rights violations as an equal. In return, Kim Kong Un gains legitimacy on the world stage.
It's a completely one-sided capitulation that gives North Korea everything they want: recognition, a reduced US presence, and a pretense for not doing anything more. "Complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" means different things to North Korea and the United States. To the Kim regime this means a departure of US nuclear capable assets: strategic bombers, submarines, and (most likely to them) US surface ships. North Korea halted their nuclear program because the test site collapsed. They won't give up their nuclear weapons or ambitions, especially since their success has coincided with accelerating their nuclear program.
Fortunately, Drew Ferguson and Congress can stop this. Unfortunately, they won't. Help elect a representative with the courage to fight for the interests of the United States.
