Damn:
Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s aunt is backing Democrat Aaron Ford to replace Laxalt.
It’s not the first time members of the prominent Laxalt family have endorsed a Democrat. Four years ago, they endorsed Democrat Ross Miller for attorney general over Laxalt, who narrowly won that race. Laxalt is now running for governor.
Neena Laxalt said she’s backing Ford over former Laxalt deputy and Republican candidate Wes Duncan because Ford is “qualified, highly intelligent, sophisticated, extremely educated and well-informed on the most crucial issues facing our state.” Ford, the Nevada Senate leader, will protect women and children, Neena Laxalt said.
“I know Aaron is a good family man and will uphold the values that Nevadans hold dear, protect our families and communities and stand up for what’s right,” Laxalt said.
Speaking of Laxalt, he really doesn’t want you to know who’s funding his campaign:
Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt signed onto a court filing last year in a California lawsuit to support keeping the identities of the donors to one of his biggest political backers secret.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California, is set to hear arguments Monday in a lawsuit that could decide whether Americans for Prosperity Foundation, a nonprofit backed by the GOP megadonors and brothers Charles and David Koch, should be forced to reveal its top donors in the Golden State.
Americans for Prosperity Foundation sued California in 2014 after then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris attempted to force the group to reveal its donor list or lose its ability to legally raise money in California. A federal judge ruled in favor of the nonprofit in 2016, and the state appealed to the 9th circuit.
In January, Laxalt and Republican attorneys general from Alabama, Louisiana, Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin filed an amicus brief supporting Americans for Prosperity Foundation’s right to keep its donors secret. Their argument stated that “the First Amendment protects the right of charitable groups to choose not to disclose the names of their donors to state officials.”
Also, we’ll see if this comes back and bites Laxalt on the ass:
A Nye County official pulled her endorsement of gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt after he announced he won’t support brothel owner Dennis Hof’s bid for a Nevada Assembly seat.
Hof pulled off an upset by defeating incumbent Assemblyman James Oscarson in the Republican primary last week. He clinched the victory with a sweeping win in rural Nye County, the largest chunk of Assembly District 36.
But Laxalt, the state’s attorney general and a fellow Republican, has distanced himself from Hof and refused to support the larger-than-life TV personality. Other leading Nevada Republicans, including Gov. Brian Sandoval and U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, followed suit.
Nye County Commissioner Donna Cox on Monday withdrew her endorsement of Laxalt, saying Nye County voters “spoke loud and clear that they want Dennis Hof for Assembly District 36.”
Cox instead is endorsing independent candidate Ryan Bundy for governor.
“I will work tirelessly to help Ryan Bundy win Nye County in the general election this fall,” she said.
