ER doc running for Congress invites Huizenga to a healthcare forum in Wyoming on Aug. 14
SPRING LAKE, Michigan — Rob Davidson, an emergency physician running for the Second Congressional District in West Michigan, today announced that he is holding a healthcare town hall in Wyoming on Aug. 14 and inviting Congressman Bill Huizenga to attend the event. Davidson had invited Huizenga to a healthcare forum he hosted on July 30 in Zeeland – Huizenga’s hometown – but the congressman declined to attend despite multiple invitations from Davidson as well as constituents. An overflow crowd of around 200 people attended the Zeeland forum.
The Wyoming event will be held at Joy Like a River church (Ministerios Ríos de Agua Viva) at 1841 Havana Ave SW, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free.
“We were not expecting such a huge turnout for our event in Zeeland, and what that showed us was how important healthcare is to everyone in West Michigan, so that’s why we’re doing a second event for more folks to share their thoughts and concerns,” Davidson said. “Republicans, Democrats and independents filled every seat and stood along the walls for two hours to discuss healthcare in an honest, spirited yet respectful way. People talked about Congress taking healthcare away from patients with preexisting conditions, raising the prices of prescription drugs, taking away lifesaving services such as mammograms and prenatal and maternity care. I appreciated hearing from people, both those who agree with me as well as those who disagree. Congressman Bill Huizenga had an opportunity to join the forum and share information that can help families overcome their healthcare challenges, and unfortunately, he chose to avoid his own constituents.”
Because seating may be limited, those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by calling 231-375-2131 or registering online. As Davidson had done before the Zeeland forum, he extended an invitation to Huizenga on Wednesday to join the Wyoming event. (Invitation letter is attached below.)
In an interview on WHTC on July 5, Huizenga said he was looking forward to hosting a town hall, and challenged his constituents who asked him tough questions at previous town halls to “bring it on.” Huizenga has yet to announce a town hall as of today.
The Wyoming forum aims to provide a platform for citizens to hear and share their healthcare stories, and discuss policies and best practices that can help address healthcare challenges.
(LETTER TO CONGRESSMAN BILL HUIZENGA)
August 1, 2018
To the Hon. Rep. Bill Huizenga:
It would have been wonderful to have you at our last healthcare forum on Monday in Zeeland. I had a wonderful conversation with voters of all persuasions – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. I heard from people who agree with me and I heard from people who disagree with me. I believe these conversations benefit from having both of us participate as candidates for the Second Congressional District. I would like to invite you to join us at another public forum on healthcare that we’re holding in Wyoming on Tuesday, August 14. The event is at the Joy Like A River United Church of Christ, 1841 Havana SW in Wyoming. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event begins at 7 p.m., and should last until 8:30 p.m.
As you know, citizens in the Second Congressional District are concerned about getting affordable quality healthcare, at a time when costs are going up. Your perspective as the member of Congress representing West Michigan would be most helpful in this discussion.
In an interview you gave on WHTC on July 5, you alluded to a willingness to host a town hall in person in the district. Many citizens voiced their eagerness to attend such an event and look forward to sharing their thoughts and concerns with you.
I wanted to extend the courtesy of inviting you to join us and invite your supporters and other members of the community.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any thoughts or questions. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Rob Davidson, MD
Candidate for the Second Congressional District
