Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s (D. RI) re-election campaign:
Donald Trump has backtracked on a lot during his tenure so far, but there's one decision he has stubbornly clung to: his refusal to release his tax returns.
In light of the embarrassing press conference he recently held with Vladimir Putin, it's only natural to wonder just why he displays such servility toward the Russian leader. Is Donald Trump financially compromised? Did he borrow money from Russian oligarchs?
The American people deserve answers, and the best place to look for them is Trump's tax returns, which he has repeatedly, forcefully refused to provide. That's just not going to cut it anymore, and I'm calling on Trump to release them now. Will you join me in demanding that Trump disclose his tax returns by signing my petition?
Since 1977, every president has publicly disclosed personal tax returns. It's a practice that strengthens our democracy, because it encourages transparency and lets the American public decide whether a presidential candidate's financial situation would compromise his or her ability to lead the country. Of course, Donald Trump has flouted this tradition, and the questions about his ties to Russia (and so much else) won't go away until he releases his returns.
Donald Trump needs to hear from as many people as possible that his caginess around this issue will not go unchallenged. It's time to speak out, Bill: Join me in demanding the release of Trump's tax returns by signing this petition now.
Thanks so much,
Sheldon
