Dr. Rob Davidson, Emergency Physician and Democratic candidate for Michigan’s Second Congressional District, recently challenged Congressman Bill Huizenga to a series of 7 debates across West Michigan. Huizenga’s team declined the first date, Monday September 10th, citing scheduling difficulties. Davidson moved forward with a town hall.
While Davidson addressed a standing room only crowd at Hope College, 14 miles away Huizenga was enjoying a round of golf at his private golf club.
Huizenga has not held an in-person public event in district since his last town hall on August 23, 2017, over one year ago. Davidson, on the other hand, has held 12 public forums in the last 6 weeks.
In a July interview with Gary Stevens on WHTC, Huizenga disparaged town hall attendees: “This is just for pure spectacle for some folks and if they really don’t want to have a conversation, that’s, that’s sad.” Huizenga made blanket generalizations about town hall participants, who number in the hundreds at each venue: “It often will be the same people and they’re the same people that have shown up at various venues and their only goal is to disrupt and to create spectacle.” Huizenga denied the tough questions discouraged him from holding another town hall, saying “bring it on.”
It was at a town hall in February of 2017 that Huizenga and Davidson first met. They had a 15 minute debate about healthcare that prompted hundreds to call for Davidson to run for Congress, and inspired him to do so. It is no wonder that Huizenga has shied away from public forums, and is specifically avoiding debates. His last debate “brought on” the strongest campaign ever against him, and is threatening his Washington insider lifestyle.
Despite his call to “bring it on”, Huizenga has yet to hold an in-person public event in the Second Congressional District, and he has yet to agree to any of the dates proposed by the Davidson campaign.
Anticipating continued stall tactics by Huizenga, Davidson needs to be able to communicate with voters on a large scale. His campaign has already knocked over 40,000 doors, and has raised more than the last 20+ years of Democratic campaigns combined. He will not take any corporate PAC money, and Huizenga has taken over $1,000,000 this year alone. He needs more help to get his message of Medicare for All and anti-Washington corruption to the voters of West Michigan.
