I know diaries are typically the sharing of the author’s opinions, but I already know my own opinions so what good does that do me? Ha. So this is more a question I’d pose for New Yorkers, or Kossacks who have an opinion about New York politics.
(If possible...I know this is a state of very cynical politics...but the point isn’t to encourage endless threads of “Cuomo sucks” commentary. I’m genuinely curious.)
The state legislature may truly flip blue in November. If that happens, it’ll be really interesting to watch because there’s been this conventional wisdom that the power sharing was holding back progressive legislation in the state.
If Democrats win true majorities in both chambers, what do you think the consequences of that might be? Are there priorities that stand out as likely to be pursued first or more vigorously? Will the legislature take up elections reforms, or do New Yorkers generally love the weird systems? Do you think the change would make state governance look more like any other particular state? In other words, would you expect New York to start looking more like California, or Washington, or some other state in the approach it takes?
It feels like a really unique situation...a very blue state that might get an opportunity to be much bluer than it has had for over a decade. Should be fascinating to watch play out.
