According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, Iowa’s 2nd Congressional district is one where young people can have a decisive impact on the results of the election. Dave Loebsack is the current Congressional representative of the district and he is running for reelection. Born in Sioux City, Loebsack grew up poor, initially raised by his single mother before he and his siblings moved in with his grandmother. Now, he wants to make sure everyone has the same opportunities he had to succeed and support along the way. He was a teacher at Iowa’s Cornell College for 24 years before he was first elected to Congress in 2006. Father of four, Loebsack and his wife Terry, a retired elementary school teacher, also have three grandchildren. Loebsack wants to continue helping the American people in Congress. He is also focusing on expanding broadband internet, protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare, rebuilding America’s infrastructure, and continuing to listen to and serve Iowans.
Loebsack’s re-election platform includes a plan to continue fighting for Iowans by cleaning up Washington, addressing climate change and investing in renewable energy, ensuring access to quality, affordable health care, protecting and expanding Social Security and Medicare, and improving veteran services. In Congress, Loebsack has a demonstrated record of voting with the Democratic Party. He has received high ratings from groups in support of civil liberties, protecting the environment, labor, and protecting women’s right to choose. Loebsack has been endorsed by End Citizens United, J Street Pac, the National Education Association, and he has been consistently supported by local newspapers throughout his time in Congress. Loebsack’s electoral success will rest upon the enthusiasm and hard work of his supporters, and young people can play a big role.
