According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, California’s 45th Congressional district is one where young people can have a decisive impact on the results of the election. So, who’s the Democratic candidate and how can young folks get involved?
A UC Irvine Law Professor that teaches Consumer Law, Katie Porter has spent decades fighting big banks. She is hyper-focused on representing middle class Americans as a consumer advocate. As a mother of three, she understands the struggles that young families face. One of the areas where she works the hardest is in reducing abusive credit card fees, advocating on behalf of those who are being treated unfairly by financial institutions . She also helped to pass credit card protections for families in 2010. Elizabeth Warren was her Law professor in college, showing where she got her dedication to consumer protection and financial fairness.
Porter’s major priorities are health care, women's health, and gun reform. On health care, Porter advocates for Medicare for All, an affordable universal health care system that covers everyone. On women's health, she supports a woman's right to choose, believes that access to birth control is a right, and will fight Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. With guns, she supports an assault weapons ban, mandatory background checks, and a healthcare system that provides quality mental healthcare.
She is endorsed by Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Ro Khanna, Emily’s List, and many other progressive leaders and groups.
Young people can get involved in this grassroots campaign by going to the volunteer section of Porter's website. There are many ways to get involved, by directly knocking on doors and calling voters, to hosting meet and greet events at your home.
